Eleven of the best known Aberdeenshire Bothy Ballads along with
Charlie’s song Lonely in the Bothy which has become a standard –
recorded by at leas
t
seven other artistes so far. It tells of the loneliness of the farms now
that mechanisation has done away with most of the workers.
The production by Marc Ellington is quite a departure from the usual
fiddle, accordian and piano. Look out for Dave Swarbrick’s exceptional
interpretation on fiddle and mandolin. Eric Ellington plays quitar Karen
Ellington banjo. From America we have Bernie Haverbaum on bass and Steve
Ransome Keyboards. Timmie Donald plays drums.
Don’t be
fooled by the Smiddyburn Strings. It is not so much a twelve fiddle
orchestra as Swarbrick multitracked twelve times. Good stuff.
Guest
appearance of Keith Schellenberg, the notorious Laird of Eigg – on
tamborine.
