Farmer’s Diary,
Vol. IV, by Charlie Allan.
£11.95 pp free UK.
The Farmer’s troubles
continue. The dreary summer of 1993 is enlivened by Mossie’s success in
growing sunflowers in Aberdeenshire despite the fact that the sun only came out
f
our times. Then there was
the record harvest in 1994 and Charlie became the first and last farmer to
present for sale a heifer with a passport (only males get those). Vol 1V takes
the Farmer up to the decision to retire. Potions the chemist will succeed him.
But when? The Farmer will keep the young man guessing and working for nothing
for as long as he can. Big Hamish buys a castle with a title and becomes a
Baron. Mossie sells his outfarm and pays off his overdraft. The Farmer buys his
first ever new tractor and the wives set off for the shops when the subsidy
cheque comes. The boys consider erecting a statue to Ray Macsharry the EEC
commissioner whose reforms were the last thing to put money in farmers’
pockets.
