The story
of Farmer Allan’s troubles continues. Mossie has become honorary crops consu

and the contracting is now done by the Man of Few Words. But all is not well.
This is the time of maximum administrative muddle. The Farmer now wrestles with
IACS forms and cattle passports to get his pensions from the Government. He must
also put a tenth of his arable land down to weeds – the dreaded setaside. The
experiment of transplanting beef embryos into Jersey cows is abandoned and, on
Mossie’s instructions a 1000 pigs are taken on for fattening. The Breadwinner
is still keeping the enterprise afloat with her job in the Toon and the older
Wasting Asset discovers the connection between spending money and earning it.
