The struggle against the weather, the government and his luck continues. The
Farmer’s circle
of
friends increases. They meet at the Discussion Group each Sunday evening at the
Salmon Inn. They include the grain barons Red Rooster, Crookie and Mossie
who is the guru of grain but is loth to tell any of his secrets. Gowkie the
small holder. Big Hamish whose digger is worth more than the Farmer’s entire
machinery and cattle put together. And Pennywashers, the white settler, who made
his name in the village when he refused to pay 10pence for a washer on the
grounds that he could make a hole in a tupenny coin and save eight pence.
