When he returned to the
family farm after three years abroad Charlie had to start from scratch. He told
the story in the Herald. These volumes reproduce the
articles which have been
bringing a smile to Scottish faces each Monday for over ten years. He had sold
the stock and anything that could be broken or stolen when he left. Volume I
tells of his struggle to re-equip the farm with cows and tractors, and himself
with friends, against a tide of rising overdraft. We meet the family. The wife,
as on so many farms nowadays is the Breadwinner. She has two jolly sons known as
the Wasting Assets and two good daughters who stuck in at school - the
Investments. And then there is Potions the chemist, who has married one of the
Investments and wants one day to replace the Farmer. He is free labour meantime.
